Mr. Monk Helps Himself by: Hy Conrad

Author: Hy Conrad
Publisher: Penguin Group
Pages: 286
Series: Mr Monk
Format: Hardcover

Description:
Now that Monk and Natalie are both in San Francisco again, life is almost back to normal for the duo, with one exception: Natalie is studying for her PI license, the last step to becoming Monk’s full partner.

Before taking the plunge, Natalie sneaks off to Half Moon Bay for a retreat run by Miranda Bigley, charismatic leader of the Best Possible Me self-help program, whose philosophy has helped Natalie deal with her recent life changes. But her plans for a relaxing weekend away are disrupted when Monk tracks her down, determined to rescue her from the cult.” Their argument is cut short when Miranda, in full view of everyone, calmly walks to the edge of a cliff and jumps off.

Even though Miranda’s death looks like suicide—especially when it’s discovered that she was on the brink of financial disaster—Natalie is sure it is murder. But Monk brushes her off to help the SFPD solve the murder of a clown, despite his coulrophobia, or fear of clowns—number ninety-nine on his list of one hundred phobias.

As Natalie and Monk begin their separate investigations, they are quickly caught up in many precarious situations, but if they want to figure out whodunit, they will have to find a way to become true partners….

My Thoughts:

I felt like reading this book was going back to the television shows and reminded me so much of Adrian and Natalie’s banter from television which I think is great when a writer can continue what was done on tv.  This one follows Natalie as she is trying to pass the P.I. test to become a licensed private investigator.  She goes off on a retreat at Half Moon Bay and not long into that her self help guru has committed suicide but Natalie doesn’t buy it something doesn’t add up.  Meanwhile Monk is dealing with a murder of his own when a Clown ends up dead, for Monk this is a huge deal as he has an OCD to Clowns.

Like any Monk story this one has all the makings of a great story.  We get to see Leland the head of the police department and how he has to get Monk on board to deal with the clown death, and how no one is buying into Natalie’s theories on the guru death. This one had all sorts of great ups and downs and very true to Monk fashion in the end we get the “this is how it happened” that everyone loves!  I am definitely going to check out all the Monk books as I am a huge fan of the tv show and miss it dearly!

The Sassy Belles are back

and this time, wedding bells are ringing!

Seven months pregnant and head over heels in love, Vivi Ann McFadden is busy pulling together the final details for her wedding to Lewis Heart, famous play-by-play announcer for the Crimson Tide. But with two wedding-planners-gone-wild, a psychic giving her advice, and the ceremony happening on the same day as the wildly popular Crimson Tide kickoff game, chaos reigns supreme. Luckily, maid of honor Blake O’Hara Heart is on the job. She’ll tackle this wedding if it’s the last thing she does!

But not everyone is cheering for the happy couple. News of the upcoming nuptials has brought Lewis’s old flame back to Tuscaloosa and she’s got a secret that could mean the end of Lewis’s marriage before it even begins.

Sexy Southern funwith a hint of magnolia!

My Thoughts:

Vivi McFadden is getting ready to get married and have her first baby with her fiance Lewis Heart, but what she doesn’t know is that he’s already married. Part of some hazing in college he got roped into a “fake wedding” but what he doesn’t realize is how real it was.

Also Blake O’Hara who’s all but divorced her no good jerky husband except he’s running for office and now she has to play the happy wife who isn’t stepping out on her no good jerk of a husband with Sonny a chief homicide detective. A man she loved since she was a young belle.

Also while all this is going on Blake is also working on a murder case of her client’s family of Walter Aaron’s who are fighting with insurance company to get his death benefits. Which opens all sorts of issues as to who would want to kill him? Or why he got a secret marriage all of the sudden and then died. And who is the mysterious bride Mrs. Tamlyn H. Hartman Aaron?

This book was so much fun I felt like I was reading similar books I’ve read by Sherryl Woods her magnolia series, I would definitely put this book in with those. I love southern women stories, they have such character, dedication and lots of love to share! Definitely my new go to author for southern books and fun characters! Can’t wait to see what happens next!

Series: Ghoul Hunter Mystery #7
Format: Nook ebook

Description:

M. J. Holliday has the unusual ability to talk to the dead. But when it comes to a vengeful ghost and a mysterious drowning, this time she may be in over her head….

THAT SINKING FEELING

Kidwella Castle in northern Wales is rumored to be haunted by a deadly ghost—the Grim Widow, who allegedly drowns unsuspecting guests in the castle’s moat. Not long after M. J. and her crew arrive at the castle to film their ghost-hunting cable TV show, Ghoul Getters, two new victims are added to the Widow’s grisly roster.

Fear ripples through the castle, especially when it’s discovered that the victims may have had help into their watery graves from the land of the living. The local inspector suspects father-son serial killers, but M. J. thinks that theory is all wet. To catch the true culprit she will need to dive deep into the castle’s past and bring some long buried secrets to the surface.

My Thoughts:

Usually M.J, Heath, Gilley, Gopher, Meg, Kim and John end up dealing with ghosts that have severe issues but nothing they have done up to this point would have them prepared for what they deal with in this book. Besides Ghost Busting they also are dealing with a serial killer, who seems to be targeting men.

This book had so much suspense and action and one severely ticked off ghost who is out to collect as many souls as possible chaining them to her. When M.J and Heath end up in the hospital M.J. decides that they need to free the souls attached to this evil ghost.

They also end up solving the mysterious murders with the help of Clarence a ghost who was killed by someone other than the ghost.

I love this series going back to see how the gang is doing and watching M.J’s relationship with Heath in this one Gilley gets a love interest how long it lasts is anyone’s guess.

Amanda’s Story by: Brian O’Grady

Title: Amanda’s Story15811676
Author: Brian O’Grady
Publisher: The Story Plant
Pages: 360
Format: Paperback
Source: Partners In Crime

Description:

In his national bestseller HYBRID, Brian O’Grady created a bracing and vividly realized tale of a virus gone out of control. At the center of that story was Amanda Flynn, a woman not killed by the EDH1 virus, but changed in frightening ways. HYBRID only hinted at the story of Amanda’s work in Honduras that led to her exposure and the ramifications when the American government sought to contain the damage. Now, that story can be told.

AMANDA’S STORY is the heart-stopping tale of a woman caught up in a storm she wanted no part of, and what happens when she refuses to be collateral damage. It is the story that readers of HYBRID have been waiting for and that new readers will find impossible to put down.

My Thoughts:

This book was sent to me via Partners In Crime for a honest and fair review.  This book starts with the death of Amanda’s husband and son.   Amanda ends up going to another country to try to get away from what has happened when she finds herself in a place where things aren’t what they seem.  In some ways this book reminds me of Robin Cook.  This book had some great characters in it, being Amanda’s husband’s parents who are great along with some of her friends that you don’t see much of nowadays.

The big mystery was figuring out how Amanda’s was infected with a disease and survived while others didn’t.  What made her so special.  Definitely a good book with lots of up and downs.

Rally ‘Round The Corpse by: Hy Conrad Tour

13436681Title: Rally ‘Round the Corpse
Author: Hy Conrad
Publisher: Seven Realms Publishing
Pages: 337
Format: Paperback
Source: Premiere Virtual Book Tours

Description:

It’s been two years since her fiance’s death. Amy Abel needs to start over. What better way for a shy, risk-averse woman to start than to sink all her savings into a travel agency specializing in adventure? Her first project is a mystery road rally through the European countryside.

At the starting line in Monte Carlo, Amy finds herself attracted to Marcus Alvarez, the most mysterious of her two dozen game-loving clients. But the rally gets off to a rocky start when an eccentric writer, the only person who knows the game’s solution, is himself murdered back in New York.

Who would kill a harmless mystery geek, and why are weird accidents beginning to happen along the way? To her horror, Amy discovers that this fictional mystery was based on a real, unsolved case, one that Marcus knows too much about. Now she has no choice but to join forces with Fanny, her domineering mother, and solve this on her own, before the killer strikes again.

My Thoughts:

This book is different then your typical mystery.  Amy Abel is running a mystery road tour, where the clients sign up to figure out who committed murder.  What screws this one up is when the owner Otto winds up dead and only two people on the tour know that Amy Abel and Otto’s assistant Marcus.

Add to that someone is messing up the road rally by adding false clues into the mix.  This was a great book trying to figure who among the tour had an axe to grind with Georgina and wanted her dead.

Can’t wait to read more by Hy Conrad his story telling ability was awesome and I was able to read this book minus a few interruptions in 2 days!  What a fun journey!

Definitely a great author, and on a side note I am a fan of both shows he’s been part of Monk, and White Collar!

The Disappearance by: Susan Berliner

Title: The Disappearance
Author: Susan Berliner
Pages: 240

Format: Paperback

Description:

When Jillian Keating is arrested for the murder of her missing boyfriend, Ryan Cornell, she has two immediate questions: Why did he frame her—and where is he hiding?

Using her own ingenuity, plus the help of a resourceful lady lawyer and a dashing young private investigator, Jillian discovers the surprising—and disturbing—answers. Her boyfriend is not what he appears to be. The real Ryan, consumed with hate, has devised an ingenious scheme to destroy her while he escapes into the past via a hidden time travel portal. But even knowing all this, Jillian is left with a more difficult question: How can she capture Ryan and bring him back?

Filled with memorable characters, bizarre twists, and riveting suspense, The Disappearance culminates with an elaborate sting operation as Jillian and her friends travel through time to lure Ryan into their clever trap. If they succeed, she will go free. But if they fail, Jillian will surely face murder charges for the death of Ryan Cornell.

My Thoughts:

Unlike most time travel books this one picks up quickly. First with a heated discussion/fight between Jillian and Ryan, then a totally different Ryan decides to go for a walk after incriminating the heck out of his girlfriend and leaving her on the hook for his murder.

Jillian dumbfounded by all this learns an awful lot about her “boyfriend” about how he wasn’t the right guy for her or even close to being in love with her blaming her for a long ago car accident that affected them both.

This book had lots of twists and turns I really enjoyed how they tricked Ryan to catch him and how Jillian moved on with her life.

The Adventure of Tilda Pinkerton by: Angela Shelton

Title: The Adventure of Tilda Pinkerton
Author: Angela Shelton
Publisher: Quiet Owl Books
Pages: 247
Series: Book 1: Crash-Landing on Ooleeoo
Format: Paperback
Source: Premiere Virtual Book Tours

Description:

A modern Mary Poppins in space.

In the middle of cosmic danger, the electrifying secret that Tilda Pinkerton, the magical hat maker, hides from the children she teaches – becomes her most miraculous gift, securing the safety of the planet she crashes on.

Somewhere out in the Sombrero Galaxy, Tilda Pinkerton–mystical maker of mysterious, magnificent, magical hats–is being hunted by the Keeper of Darkness.

Yet Tilda simply does not recall, at all, after taking a tremendous fall.

No one on Ooleeoo, where Tilda crash-landed, knows she is from another planet. Only Star Jumper Randy can tell her—but he’s light years away, frantically searching for his missing love, desperate that without her, the entire galaxy soon may be lost.

Even in the middle of cosmic danger, Tilda loves to create hats, for which she has a rare and uncanny knack. All who receive them sparkle, in fact—and spark their innermost talent. With a Tilda hat, people can suddenly do whatever they dream of, causing brilliant ideas to grow madly.

With Gladys the toad, who thinks she’s a cat, and Frank the fish, who lives in her hat, Tilda must discover who she is and what her enemy wants from her so badly.

But the Mayor of Moodle has other plans, including a ban on all wearing of hats, everywhere on Ooleeoo. His dark and forbidding actions seem to coincide with something unworldly, threatening all with a nameless dread and slowly blacking out the sky. With Ooleeoo itself turning upside down, how can anyone survive?

In this first in a series of Tilda Pinkerton adventures, Tilda must fight the battle of her life and risk all—even the galaxy and stars—by revealing her most electrifying secret.

My Thoughts:

This book was sent to me for a honest and fair review.  The cover picture is beautiful to say the least.  I love the vibrant colors that are in it.

The story begins with Tilda Pinkerton crash landing onto Ooleeoo where she resides for three years stranded.  Tilda creates hats for people and teaches the children at school.  The Mayor of Moodle is against everything to do with Tilda.  He bans school and the hats. Because he thinks the people are acting too foolishly about them.  He recruits those who are angry at residents who’ve gotten hats because they haven’t gotten any yet.  Little do they know little bugs in their ears are advising them badly.

Star Jumper Randy is trying to find a way to get in contact with Tilda to tell her what is happening.  But with her antenna bent from the crash to Ooleeoo she isn’t getting messages.  Randy finally gets an assignment to track strange black bugs and capture them and report back.  Finding out what is controlling them he proceeds against his boss to track down Tilda and find her.  He is surprised to find her alive and well even with a bent antenna.  Randy helps Tilda find her purpose and help the residents of Ooleeoo.

In this story I enjoyed the characters which there are many.  They all seem to have strong opinions to different degrees.  There is lots of adventure of creativity in this story, I loved how the author was able to weave the story together.  This book went very quickly and I didn’t find any slow areas. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book and where Tilda is?  Definitely a book that can be read in a day!!
