Hello Paula Thanks for your question.
Is it difficult to incorporate religion and mystery together? And what inspired you to write this book?
It wasn’t at all difficult to combine religion, mystery, and murder, for two reasons. The first is my belief, and that of many others, that mystery – the mystery of birth, life, love, and death, even violent death, is the very essence of religion.
The second is the tradition of clerical mysteries extending to the very beginnings of the genre. In our own time, death is often its own thing, handled by the police, coroner or near or extended family – without benefit of clergy. But the tradition is that every death is mourned, or celebrated, or at least acknowledged in a religious way. This is the tradition I’m documenting.
I was inspired to write the book by my love of mysteries, going back to my childhood, nurtured by my mother. After I retired as a social work administrator, I wanted to write about what I hope for us all: to belong to a lively, sometimes contentious, but always loving community that cares for each other, each contributing their unique gifts in their own mysterious ways.
