What if you were bound for a new world, about to pledge your life to someone you’d been promised to since birth, and one unexpected violent attack made survival—not love—the issue?
Out in the murky nebula lurks an unseen enemy: the New Horizon. On its way to populate a distant planet in the wake of Earth’s collapse, the ship’s crew has been unable to conceive a generation to continue its mission. They need young girls desperately, or their zealous leader’s efforts will fail. Onboard their sister ship, the Empyrean, the unsuspecting families don’t know an attack is being mounted that could claim the most important among them…
Fifteen-year-old Waverly is part of the first generation to be successfully conceived in deep space; she was born on the Empyrean, and the large farming vessel is all she knows. Her concerns are those of any teenager—until Kieran Alden proposes to her. The handsome captain-to-be has everything Waverly could ever want in a husband, and with the pressure to start having children, everyone is sure he’s the best choice. Except for Waverly, who wants more from life than marriage—and is secretly intrigued by the shy, darkly brilliant Seth.
But when the Empyrean faces sudden attack by their assumed allies, they quickly find out that the enemies aren’t all from the outside.(less)
I received that audio book of this story from Esther Bochner from Macmillan Audio for a honest and fair review. This story takes place in space aboard a ship called the Empyrean and a relationship is forming between Waverly and Kiernan. Early on Kiernan proposes to Waverly. She is unsure of what to do knowing she is only 15 and wants to marry for love not duty.
A ship is hovering near theirs. The other ships intentions are totally known early on. And within minutes an attack begins. But not before Seth another teenager on the ship warns Waverly that their captain may not be all he’s cracked up to be.
This story reminds me of shows like Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek in a round about way. The people on the ship are without a planet to call home. They are waiting 45 years to land on the planet to find out anything about it.
The girls end up kidnapped and brought to the New Horizon ship under the pretense of a leak and the Empyrean being destroyed. Waverly quickly figures out what is really going on and isn’t going to take it laying down. She plans an escape with her fellow friends and they quickly find out they have exchanged one religious leader for another. Is it too late to save their ship?
What a great story definitely a story for those who like books that take place in space. I found myself rooting time and again for Waverly hoping she would be successful against New Horizons. Definitely a great read!
